The Ribera del Duero wine region stretches over the northern plateau and the River Duero runs right through its whole length. Even though the first wines were produced here in Roman Spain, it would not be until the 13th century when the vineyards were truly established in the region. The winemaking tradition, with its periods of good and bad times, has survived to the present and has left its mark on the landscape, the culture and the personality of its people. The zone achieved winemaking denomination of origin status in 1982. Up until then, the clarets of each year were produced and drunk, and the denomination of origin was established thanks to the endeavours of a small group of wineries determined to do things correctly.
