A different expression of Tokaj
Mandolás is a surprising wine. Its essence is young, ground-breaking, revolutionary and not frightened to explore... and is able to enrich the winemaking tradition of a region as distinguished as Tokaj.
A different wine that has managed to break from the past, giving impetus to Tokaj's new present, where dry white wines, led by Mandolás, are proving to be ground-breaking.
This wine's name comes from the old way of referring to the vineyard from where it comes. Mandolás is one of the Oremus vineyards and it is only planted with Furmint, the noblest variety of the region.
During the weeks leading up to the harvest, the state of ripening of the grape is systematically checked and the golden yellow, health and ripe bunches are picked.
A must with great density is obtained using a delicate and gentle pressing. Fermentation is in new wood barrels, which are carefully prepared, and takes between 8 and 12 days.
The wine is aged in 136-litre small barrels, which are typical of the region.
Description
Made from the Furmint grape variety, Mandolás has evolved since its first vintage in 2000. Improvements have been made at all stages, from the vineyard to its commercial release, harmoniously combining the latest wine-making techniques with age-old traditions.
In the vineyard, we look for plots with the right density of planting, paying special attention to the ripeness of the grapes to ensure a good selection of golden, ripe and healthy clusters. Our efforts to seek out old Furmint clones (sourced from the Petrács vineyard, more than 50 years old) also help to improve the quality of Mandolás every vintage.
The hand-selected grapes are gently pressed before fermentation, which takes place in new Hungarian oak barrels (20%) and stainless steel vats (80%). Seventy per cent of the wine is aged in Hungarian oak barrels for three months with weekly stirring of the lees (batonnage) and a further three months of complete rest.
Mandolás Furmint is a young, fruity wine with fresh aromas, yet it is full-bodied and expressive with bright acidity.
As 2021 was an extremely cold vintage, this Mandolás shows great freshness and floral aromas. Its vibrant acidity lends this wine enormous ageing potential.General information

The winter was mild and rainy without any cold damage. November and December were the rainiest months in the past 10 years.
Spring was cold and dry, however. Budbreak occurred normally on the expected dates, but subsequent growth was slower. Rainfall was abundant in April and May.
Summer was also cold and very rainy, with flowering normal, but veraison was somewhat delayed. The weather changed after August 15, with the summer becoming drier and very sunny, which really helped the grapes to ripen. September remained dry and sunny, good ripening weather.

After a long and dry winter with little snow and cold showers in February, spring was mild and dry. Both bud break and fruit set for Furmint grapes were early. Bud break started April 8th and flowering at the beginning of June, along with a dry season favoring fruit set. Mild temperature, balanced rainfall throughout the summer and a quick though early autumn, brings out rich flavors and balanced acidity.

The Tokaj region, Tokaj-Hegyalja lies within the range of mountains in north-east Hungary. The village of Tolcsva and the Oremus winery are located at the geographical heart of this region.
Mandolás wine comes from the Mandulas terroir, one of the Oremus vineyards in which only the Furmint grape variety is planted. A dry wine, which marks a rupture with the tradition of sweet wines from the zone. In fact, Mandolás was the first dry wine produced in the region of Tokaj.
Delicate, light pressing is used to obtain a high density must. Matured in small 136-litre barrels typical of the region, with bâtonnage during the first month. Mandolás is a highly unctuous and silky wine.
Mandolás is a mould-breaking wine due to its conception and place of birth. It is a complex wine perfectly uniting freshness and acidity, very common in Tokaj region and its wines.
